A mother elephant and her two calves were found dead in a paddy field in Salboni, West Bengal, on Sunday morning, electrocuted by a wire farmers had strung around their fields in one of the state’s most important elephant habitats.

An elephant named Bharat spent two days refusing to leave the spot in Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh, where his companion died of electrocution, forcing the state’s Forest Department to bring in four tuskers from two tiger reserves before he could be safely captured.
