DNA from trafficked pangolins traces a Northeast India–China axis
A landmark study published in PLOS Biology in May 2026 has demonstrated, for the first time at scale, that DNA recovered from trafficked pangolins can be used to trace the animals back to their geographic origin with precision — and the findings have direct and significant implications for India.
The study, led by Sean Heighton and Philippe Gaubert of the University of Toulouse and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, sequenced DNA from more than 700 samples of three pangolin species — white-bellied, Sunda, and Chinese — drawn from museum collections, field sites, bushmeat markets, and law enforcement seizures across multiple countries. Using genetic data from samples of confirmed geographic origin, the team built a genomic reference map capable of identifying where any given trafficked specimen was originally poached.
For India, the key finding is the identification of an active trafficking network originating from the forests of northeastern India — particularly around Arunachal Pradesh and Assam — feeding directly into Yunnan province in China. The study also disproved a long-standing assumption: that local and international pangolin markets operate separately. In practice, domestic supply hubs in India overlap with the global trafficking networks linking to China and Vietnam — the same animals enter both.
The scale of the problem in India is stark in the study’s underlying data: 8,603 pangolins have been seized in India since 1991. Of all the resulting wildlife crime cases, only 1.4 per cent have resulted in a conviction.
The practical application of this technique is significant. Law enforcement agencies — including the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau — will be able to compare DNA samples from confiscated pangolins against the genomic reference map to identify precisely where the animal was poached, connect disparate seizures to the same trafficking network, and build cases against syndicate operations that currently evade prosecution by fragmenting their supply chains across state and national boundaries. Purnima Barman wins the 2026 National Geographic Wayfinder Award

Dr Purnima Devi Barman, the Assam-based wildlife biologist and founder of the Hargila Army, has been named one of the 15 global recipients of the 2026 Wayfinder Award presented by the National Geographic Society and Kia America. She will be honoured at the National Geographic Society’s Spotlight event in Washington D.C. from 14 to 18 June 2026.
The Wayfinder Award recognises 15 global changemakers annually for outstanding contributions in science, conservation, education, technology, and storytelling. Dr Barman was selected for her pioneering community-led work to protect the greater adjutant stork (Leptoptilos dubius), locally known as the hargila — a large, critically endangered wading bird once viewed with indifference or hostility in the villages where it nested.
Dr Barman’s journey began in 2007 during her PhD research in Kamrup district, when she discovered that storks were abandoning wetlands for treetop nests in villages — and that their nesting trees were being cut down. Rather than limiting her response to scientific documentation, she mobilised village women to become active protectors of the bird and its habitat. What began as a modest community outreach effort grew into the Hargila Army — now more than 20,000 women strong — which has transformed nesting sites into protected community assets, produced weavers who incorporate hargila motifs into textiles sold nationally, and shifted the cultural perception of a bird previously associated with bad omens.
The results are documented and remarkable. Under Dr Barman’s leadership, the greater adjutant stork population in Assam has grown to more than 1,800 individuals, and the state now holds the world’s largest breeding colony of the species. The greater adjutant’s global population, once confined to a handful of sites, has stabilised in part because of the conservation infrastructure built around these Assam colonies.
The recognition comes at a difficult personal moment: Dr Barman lost her mother on 5 June, World Environment Day, just days before the award was announced.

Common coots and a wetland in Thoothukudi

The lakes, ponds, and wetlands of Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) district in Tamil Nadu have become a gathering point for bird watchers in recent weeks, drawn by the visible and active presence of common coots — Fulica atra — across the district’s water bodies. The birds have been foraging in groups during the early morning and evening hours, and their social behaviour and unhurried activity on the water has made them a popular subject for wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts in the area.
The common coot is a familiar winter visitor to peninsular India — a slate-black waterbird with a distinctive white frontal shield and bill, widespread across Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa, and listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. In India, it is a regular presence on wetlands, reservoirs, and urban water bodies during the cooler months, though sightings can vary considerably by year depending on rainfall patterns and wetland conditions.
What makes the Thoothukudi sightings noteworthy is not rarity but the signal they carry. Environmentalists working in the district have cited the sustained presence of coots and other waterbirds as evidence of the underlying ecological health of the district’s wetland network — wetlands that have faced pressure from industrial activity, coastal development, and declining water quality over recent decades. The coots’ return, alongside flamingos, pelicans, and other water birds documented in the district in recent seasons, suggests that conservation and water quality efforts are producing measurable results at the landscape level.
