A leopard that forest officials believed was unconscious after being hit by a vehicle near Davanagere sprang awake mid-rescue on Tuesday and attacked the official trying to tranquillise it.

As reported by Deccan Chronicle:

“However, when officials attempted to administer an injection, the leopard suddenly regained consciousness and jumped on to the forest official Marulasiddappa. The animal chased him, leaving him injured. The other forest officials immediately intervened and managed to control the leopard before administering the injection.”

The leopard had been crossing the Bengaluru–Pune National Highway that morning when a vehicle struck it. Unable to move properly, it fell into a canal running alongside the road. By the time forest officials arrived and had traffic under control, the animal appeared to be unconscious.

Marulasiddappa was taken to hospital in Davanagere for treatment. The leopard was tranquillised and shifted to a rescue centre.
