A leopard that broke into a house in Himachal Pradesh‘s Sirmaur district on Friday, going after a dog inside, stayed trapped in the room for the next 36 hours before forest officials could safely tranquillise and release it back into the wild on Sunday.

“A leopard which entered a house in a village in Sirmaur district’s Sangrah subdivision has been rescued after 36 hours, officials said on Sunday. According to eyewitness Rambhaj, the big cat entered a ground-floor room of retired teacher Meena Ram’s house in Chuinadhar village to hunt a dog. The leopard attacked the dog in the room and a fierce fight ensued between them.”

The household locked the room and alerted the Forest Department, whose team — led by Sangrah Forest Range Officer Satya Prakash Sharma — reached Chuinadhar village, in Sirmaur’s Sangrah subdivision, to begin the rescue. Cornering a leopard behind a closed door meant waiting on a tranquilliser gun and a sharpshooter called in from outside the area, which is what stretched the operation to a day and a half.

What became of the dog in that room isn’t reported. The leopard, once tranquillised, was driven to nearby dense forest and released, and a medical examination afterwards found it in perfect health.
