Photographs by Anupam Dutta, a Kolkata-based consultant, wildlife photographer and writer with over two decades of experience in technology, analytics and business consulting. A former Big Four partner, he now works in AI, data and digital transformation, and photographs birds, wild animals and landscapes across India and abroad — his work rooted in patient observation of wildlife in its natural surroundings, from intimate portraits and behaviour to birds in flight and the landscapes they inhabit. He also writes about his time in the field.

The bird is a Sulawesi Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx fallax), photographed by Dutta in June 2026 during a wildlife photography trip to Sulawesi, Indonesia. The species is endemic to the island and, unusually for a kingfisher, keeps to lowland and hill forest rather than water; its shy, unobtrusive habits mean it’s rarely seen despite the rufous-lilac and azure plumage.
