Armed poachers will be shot at sight in the Corbett Tiger Reserve, according to an order issued by the park’s director.
The order is part of an intensive anti-poaching drive started in the park after reports that several poachers have entered the forests. There is a high alert in CTR, according to Shahe Alam, a naturalist who works for Tigerland Safaris and Tours based in Dhikuli village.
Poachers will be shot only in an act of self defence, The Hindu newspaper reported, citing CTR Director Parag Madhukar Dhakate.
One tiger was killed in Dechauri Range of Ramnagar division in Corbett on Jan. 19, according to Tigernet.nic.in. So far this year, 18 tigers have been found dead or killed in India. Of those four incidences are from Uttarakhand state, which is home to CTR.
