A tiger killed a 65-year-old farmer in Chamarajanagar district’s Badagalapura village on Monday evening, and by Tuesday morning villagers were refusing to let the Forest Department move his body until they had a firm promise of compensation and a government job for his family.

As reported by Deccan Herald:

“A 65-year-old farmer named Basavanna was killed in a tiger attack at Badagalapura village in Chamarajanagar taluk on Monday evening. He was working in his field when the tiger attacked him. The animal partially consumed the body and dragged it into a nearby sugarcane field.”

Basavanna had gone out to cut grass for his cattle. When he failed to return home, his family went looking and found the tiger still with the body; it fled as people approached. Word spread fast, and hundreds of people from surrounding villages gathered at the scene.

The crowd’s terms were specific: no one could take Basavanna’s body away until the family had compensation and a government job in hand. The Karnataka Forest Department‘s Deputy Conservator of Forests for the BRT Tiger Reserve, Sripathi, travelled to Badagalapura along with the local tahsildar, Girija, to negotiate with the villagers.

Badagalapura sits on the edge of a landscape with two tiger reserves — BRT and Bandipur flank Chamarajanagar district on either side.
